P-TECH
Blue Youth Grant Program
The Blue Youth Grant is an effort under the Ocean Tech Hub (“OTH”)—a collaboration between the RI Commerce Corporation (“Corporation”), RI Department of Labor and Training and the Community College of Rhode Island (“CCRI”)—to support student interest and skills in careers in OTH core technology areas of robotics, sensors, advanced materials, composites and artificial intelligence/machine learning (“AI/ML”), with a focus on undersea applications. The Blue Youth Innovation Grant seeks to prepare at least 100 students for future learning and employment in these up-and-coming industries critical to our national and regional economic development and security.
Talent Development
Rhode Island Commerce’s P-TECH initiative establishes a qualified talent pipeline for companies in some of the state’s most advanced industries and help Rhode Island high school students prepare and train today for future career opportunities.
- No-cost, public high school program that includes grades 9-14 and admits students via lottery.
- Partnership between a high school, the Community College of Rhode Island and an industry partner (or partners) in a growth industry.
- Steering committee made up of representatives from the program’s partners who work together to plan, implement and continually improve the program.
- Curriculum aligning high school, college coursework and the workplace with a focus on pathways that set students up to succeed in college and career. The result is a pathway that allows students to graduate with a high school diploma, an associate degree from the Community College of Rhode Island and relevant professional experience in some of Rhode Island’s high-growth, high-wage industries.
Through the collaboration of the State, school districts, the Community College of Rhode Island and Rhode Island employers, the initial P-TECH programs opened at Rogers High School in Newport, Providence Career and Technical Academy, and Westerly High School in 2016.
Two more P-TECH programs launched in fall 2017 at North Providence Highschool and Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center.
