MARY JO KAPLAN
Commerce Corporation Board Member
MJ is a business transformation consultant, social entrepreneur, academic, speaker and writer based in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. She founded Kaplan Consulting Network in 2000. Their work weaves across sectors, enabling teams of teams in organizations, communities and networks to align purpose and operationalize impact. MJ believes that human-centered, participatory, creative, and tech-enabled approaches to complex systems lead to better-faster impact.
Partnership is central to MJ’s work. She is an Associate at RISD Center for Complexity, Centre for Social Impact (New Zealand) and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. She guest lectures frequently at venues including Brown University, Ross School of Management, Yale University, Harvard University, Auckland University of Technology and Victoria University.
In addition to serving Commerce RI as a board member, MJ is a co-founder and board member of Loomio, a global social enterprise software company. She also serves on the board, executive committee and equity committee for Social Enterprise Greenhouse.
MJ was an Ian Axford Fulbright Fellow in New Zealand In 2013. She was awarded the Cordes Innovation Fellowship by Asoka U and honored as The Outstanding Mentor for RI Business Women. MJ earned her M.Ed. from Harvard University and B.A. Brown University.
